Women posing with a fake mustache

Hipster women (and men who can't actually grow a real hipster mustache) almost invariably have a picture of themselves sporting a fake mustache in their social networking platforms (facebook, online dating, twitter, etc). This inexplicable phenomenon took off sometime in the past 5 years and is now a staple of the 'culture,' with several variations. One can only speculate why this trend exists, but it has to be some sort of ironic take on the irony of the ironic male hipster mustache. The obvious answer is that all hipsters crave attention while incessantly pointing out how annoying other people craving attention are.

Variations include, but are not limited to :

-the mustache drawn on finger, with the finger placed strategically above the upper lip for photo purposes

-the less popular, but still oft-used plain finger

-the penciled in , usually pencil thin (of course)

-some sort of prop with suggestive mustache art (coffee mugs are a great example)

-the felt cutout glued or otherwise applied to the mustache area

-the full blown fake mustache, from some sort of gag gift shop or costume shop

If you are somehow able to break down and explain this phenomenon, or can suggest some variations that I've left off, please comment below!

  1. Ha ha! I admit, I have a photo with a mustache on (pink), but in my defense it was for a friend's mustache bday party. :)

  2. The photo w/ fake mustache and being a hipster aren't mutually exclusive, but the correlation is quite remarkable.

  3. It's my pet peeve and I think it's over-played and just plain dumb. You forgot the ole mustache on a stick! Hardy har har!

  4. Completely agree. Is there anyone on this planet that actually thinks this is funny? It boggles the mind and disheartens the spirit.
